How Retro Games Are Evolving to Match A More Mobile Gaming Industry

  • PRG

Retro games never die out. Pacman, Super Mario, Halo and Donkey Kong are all great examples of retro games that were not only popular in the 80s but have also stood the test of time. The interesting thing when it comes to these retro games is the fact that retro games were characterized also by their outdated hardware. Today, there is no space for outdated hardware and yet retro games are still a term not only used but often heralded, as they remind you of a sweeter time in the past. Recently, there has been quite the shift toward mobile gaming and the collaboration between retro games and a mobile interface has certainly been fascinating.

This article aims to shed light on how the rise of mobile gaming game to be, how retro games are staying on trend and how technological changes have impacted the greater industry of gaming.

A Move to Mobile

You can’t deny that many things have become mobile. Never before has there been a time where people have wanted to engage with mobile games as much as they have today. Just think about it in your daily life – you use your mobile phone for nearly everything. From shopping to chatting to sometimes even working. Mobile phones have simply became part of the culture of today’s digital age, especially when it comes to gaming and this goes beyond retro games. There is one particular niche within the gaming industry that has done especially well in regards to elegantly executing the shift to mobile and that’s been the casino industry. Now there are many mobile casinos and games that are targeted to players looking to experience some wagering and betting enjoyment whilst on the go. These mobile casinos and games don’t leave anything to be desired, as they have just as many intersting features and tools as any other desktop or laptop game.

A lot of the older generation, those that are used to playing games either on arcade machines or at home on their desktops, find it hard to believe that you can play games online now without missing out on any of the benefits but it’s the truth. Gaming devopers have spent a lot of time crafting these older styled devices games into mobile platforms and interfaces and have done a very good job at it. Speaking of gaming developers, it is these individuals who have managed to also bring retro games back to life and keep them on trend.

Retro Games Are Here To Stay

Rettro games are ever-changing. A game from the 90s falls into the category of retro when it hits 30 years typically and this is much the same with every year that passes, new games fall into the retro game category. As this is an ever-growing pool, you can’t just let these games die out as technology gets better, which is why game developers are doing all they can to ensure that these games stay current.

The best way that they can ensure that games stay current is by updating older models into new models. This might sound a bit complex and the technical side of it is for sure, but the idea is really simple and can be easily exmapled with an example. Say you’re looking at Pacman, you’re used to the interface, sound and speed but it looks a bit weird on your massive iPhone 16 screen. This is where gaming developers would step in. They wouldn’t change the game in any way, as this would take away from the authenticity of the game, however, they would log into the back-end of the game to make sure that is shows with the correct resolution and pixelation like any other modern game. The same process is done with loads of other games and this brings retro games to the forefront.

This is how gaming developers are able to make sure that retro games never disappear.

Technological Changes

Now, as well as gaming developers try to keep up with changes in the industry, sometimes it can be a bit tricky. Therefore, the biggest challenge for retro games has to be technological changes. Some of the changes are great as they work in favor of getting more retro games online, however, some of them are not so great, as they make the work of a gaming developer much harder.

If you think about it logically, it makes sense. Online technology is so robust and reliable now that almost anyone can pick up a computer and try to programme their own game. With free programming tools available on YouTube, there is even a set by step process on how this works. Therefore, more games are cropping up than ever and this is of course a challenge to the world of retro games, who rely of the continued and lengthy support of their keen players.

Looking Ahead

The world of retro games was first seen as an industry on the cusp of extinction, however, thanks to pure taste from a lot of players and being able to adjust games to suit the more modern interfaces, retro games are actually seeing a rise in popularity. It will be interesting to see how artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) impact retro games as that’s either going to be a big opportunity or a big threat. Only time will tell.
